For Family, Whānau, and Carers
North Haven can offer listening ears, personal advice and practical help as you manage the emotions, complexities and challenges of your loved one living with a life-limiting condition or terminal illness.
Our specialist Family Support team includes counsellors and social, cultural and spiritual care workers. They contribute to the clinical and medical care provided by North Haven and work closely with the nurses and doctors. The team embody the holistic wrap-around service and therapies offered by North Haven.
We are a community charity, and our services are free. We encourage you to make use of them.
Please know that it is okay to ask us for help and support. We’ll journey alongside you during your loved one’s illness and in your grief and bereavement when they are gone.
North Haven also offers a Carer Support Group and a Bereavement Support Group.
Tiakina Te Kaitiaki (Caring for Carers)
The Tiakina Te Kaitiaki (Caring for Carers) service is provided to support the informal carers* of those living with a life-limiting condition in the last year of life and not already enrolled with Hospice.
The aim is to support the Carer’s overall wellbeing by helping them connect to resources, funding and community organisations that strengthen them to continue their vital caring role.
*An informal carer is any person, e.g. a family/whānau member, friend or neighbour who is giving regular 24/7 ongoing assistance to another person.
Get in touch with our Tiakina Te Kaitiaki support service covering all of the Whāngarei District and the south-east of Kaipara District including Waipu and Mangawhai.

Social support is essential to the care we provide and is wide-ranging. It may mean helping you access other support services or residential care, arranging mobility equipment or providing information about benefits and entitlements.
Te Tumu Herenga Waka offers a solid foundation and anchor point for whānau to rely on in troubled and difficult times, with compassion, empathy and aroha.
