If you have been told you have a life-limiting condition or a terminal illness and live in the Whangārei or south-east Kaipara Districts we may be able to help you.
Our communities of care stretch from Hūkerenui and Whangaruru in the north to Ōruawharo, Topuni, Manugaturoto and Kaiwaka in the south and east to Mangawhai.
You can be any age. We are a community charity, and our services are free.
Your diagnosis should not limit your ability to live your life.
We will help you make the most of the time you have left, however long that may be, with our specialist palliative care. You will be supported to live as well as possible and, when the time comes, to allow death to occur naturally with comfort and dignity.
We’ll also support your family/whānau and carers throughout this time and during their bereavement.
Supporting you
We will support you to live as well as possible and make the most of the time available to you. We also support your family, whānau and carers through this time. North Haven care is usually provided in your home or place of residence wherever that may be within our area.
Our specialist care is holistic extending beyond just physical needs and also places equal importance on your emotional, social, cultural and spiritual needs and wants.
If you are in Whangārei Hospital we will visit you there.
If your symptoms can’t be managed at home or are complex enough to require closer attention, you may spend a short time at Te Whare Hūmārie North Haven in Tikipunga, Whangārei until you are ready to return home again. This is an option if your family or whānau carers need some time out or a break too.
You can stay in the comfort of your own home or place of residence and will still have North Haven’s specialist care and support to call on 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
If you are already in the care of Hospice Kaipara, Hospice Mid-Northland or Far North Community Hospice, our In-Patient Unit (IPU) at Te Whare Hūmārie in Tikipunga, Whangārei, is also available to you if needed.
Should you come to stay at Te Whare Hūmārie North Haven Hospice, it will likely only be for five to seven days until you return home or to your place of residence. Each room is private, with an ensuite, TV and balcony overlooking the beautiful Paranui Valley.
We have spaces at Te Whare Hūmārie for everyone’s use; a lounge, quiet room, living and dining room (Matai Room), small kitchen and our lovely gardens.
North Haven welcomes family and friends and has flexible visiting times.
Children are also welcome, and we have a small range of toys, DVDs and games to keep them busy. Well-behaved pets are also welcome visitors when arranged beforehand with the team.
We understand the importance of spending quality time with whānau and family and have overnight accommodation available should family and friends need it. Visitors can stay in purpose-built overnight rooms or can share your room if you prefer.
Menus for our patients are created daily by our professional cooks and will be tailored to suit dietary requirements and preferences. Family and whānau are welcome to bring in any favourite foods or drinks and these can be kept in the kitchen in the Matai Room.
Who helps you?
North Haven’s support is provided by a team which includes nurses, doctors, pharmacist, counsellors, social workers, a spiritual care worker, Te Tumu Herenga Waka, health care assistants and trained volunteers. We work with you, your next-of-kin, as well as your GP and others you want involved in your care.
Please know that it is okay to ask us for help and support. We’ll journey alongside you to maximise your quality of life.
Our community nurses will make regular phone calls to you and visit when required. How often we phone and visit is flexible and will be guided by your condition and your needs.
North Haven nurses assess your ongoing and changing symptoms and help manage them accordingly. They can also help you, your family, whānau and people caring for you to manage your symptoms in-between nurse phone calls and visits. Our nurses also work closely with your GP, district nurses, and other healthcare services at the hospital or in the community to ensure you receive all the care you need.
We also have trained volunteers available. North Haven volunteers may help with companionship visits, “Nurturing Touch” therapeutic massage, and writing your “Life Reflections” biography which is often a treasured keepsake for your loved ones.
End of life
North Haven will help and support you until the time comes to allow a comfortable and dignified death to occur naturally. We’ll also support your family, whānau and carers through this time, their grief and bereavement.
